Publishing a content item creates a file that is transferred to the publishing target by file system copy or file transfer protocol (FTP). You can publish one content item at a time or multiple content items simultaneously. Publishing a folder publishes all content items in that folder as well as the subfolders it contains.
If you have the appropriate role, you can publish a content item while you are working in the Content Item Editor or Publisher Explorer, or you can schedule content items and folders for later publication. If the content item is part of a workflow, the content item must be in a workflow activity that allows publication before it can be published. It can then be published immediately or be scheduled for later publication.
This topic discusses:
You cannot publish a content item unless you have the following:
If these conditions are not met, the Publish menu option is not available.
If workflow is attached to the folder containing the content item (and the content item has not been explicitly excluded from workflow), then the content item must be in a workflow activity that allows it to be published.
Note: You can publish a presentation template with no associated data entry template, so long as it is marked as a complete page. To do so, select Complete Page (under Publishable) in the Presentation Template Editor.
Right-click anywhere within the selection, then click Publish.
