After you set up folders in Publisher, designate where the contents of the folders will be previewed and published.
To configure Publisher for either a preview site or a live (published) Web site, you must determine the location of the server and how to access it. The content can reside on the same server as your Publisher, or it can reside separately on a network drive. Your published content can be copied to the server using standard file transfer, over a path that includes the drive letter and folders, or a UNC path. For example:
file://localhost/w:/website/wwwroot/
or file:////website/wwwroot/
Web servers are often accessible by file transfer protocol (FTP). To
use an FTP site, you must find out the name of the FTP server and its
security requirements. You may be allowed to upload to the server anonymously,
or you may be required to provide a valid user name and password. FTP
transfer paths takes the form of ftp://host:port/path/
. For
example:
ftp://ftp.mycompany.com/wwwroot/
No matter how you upload files to a site, you must also determine the URL (address) of the site so that Internet browsers can display its contents.
Producers and Administrators configure the preview and publish sites. Producers are usually responsible for ensuring that preview sites are ready for other users. Only content items that are associated with a presentation template through their data entry template can be published.
For more information about the different roles, such as Producers and Contributors, see Roles and Permissions.
